Peter Obi Condemns Bakassi Party Office Attack, Warns Against Fraud and Violence in Politics

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly condemned the reported attack on a political party office in Bakassi, describing the incident as a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic system.

Reacting to the development, Obi said the alleged assault on the office of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) goes beyond a partisan dispute and represents a broader attack on democratic principles in the country.

“What occurred at the ADC office in Bakassi is not merely an attack on a political party; it is an attack on democracy itself,” Obi said in a statement that has circulated widely and was referenced by Nigerian media outlets such as The Punch and Daily Trust.

According to the former governor of Anambra State, the ability of individuals to allegedly storm a political office, destroy property and escape arrest reflects a worrying decline in democratic standards and accountability.

He warned that Nigeria’s political culture risks deteriorating further if issues of credibility, qualification and transparency in leadership are ignored.

“In the current state of Nigeria, what can we expect when leadership standards have plummeted to the extent that qualification, certification and credibility are no longer deemed necessary for public office?” Obi said.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate also raised concerns about allegations of forged credentials in the political space, noting that such developments send negative signals about the integrity of leadership in the country.

“If we continue down this path, violence may become the future of our democracy,” he warned.

Obi stressed that the pursuit of political power through fraudulent means or violent tactics can never produce credible leadership. Instead, he said such actions only create instability that will ultimately affect citizens and future generations.

“Fraud and violence can never create true leadership; they will only result in chaos,” he said, adding that the consequences of such instability would be felt across society.

The politician concluded his remarks with his well-known reform message, saying that despite the challenges facing the country, a better future remains possible.

“A New Nigeria is possible,” he said.

Political analysts say Obi’s comments reflect growing concerns about political violence and the integrity of democratic institutions in Nigeria, particularly as tensions rise ahead of future electoral contests.
