Peter Obi has called for a halt to Nigeria’s recently amended tax laws, warning that the new regulations could place undue strain on citizens and businesses. According to Obi, even respected accounting firm KPMG has identified 31 major problem areas in the legislation, ranging from drafting errors to conflicting policies and administrative loopholes—issues that any responsible government should address immediately.

Obi expressed concern that these critical flaws were only highlighted in private meetings between the National Revenue Service and KPMG, raising questions about how ordinary Nigerians are expected to understand their tax obligations. “Taxation is more than a fiscal tool; it is a social contract between the government and the people. You cannot enforce a system that citizens neither understand nor trust,” he said.

The former vice-presidential candidate noted that globally, effective tax systems provide clear benefits, including improved healthcare, better education, infrastructure, job opportunities, and social safety nets. In Nigeria, however, the focus appears skewed toward revenue collection, with little clarity on what citizens gain in return. Obi argued that legitimate reform requires months of consultation with businesses, workers, and civil society to ensure transparency and public understanding—steps that have been largely absent in Nigeria’s current process.

He warned that rushing into enforcement without public buy-in risks creating confusion, mistrust, and economic hardship. Nigerians are already grappling with rising food and transport costs, declining purchasing power, and deepening poverty, yet the new tax regime adds more uncertainty. “Without trust, taxation feels like punishment. Without clarity, it breeds confusion. Without tangible public value, it amounts to robbery,” Obi said.

He concluded by urging the government to engage citizens openly, build consensus, and prioritize policies that deliver real benefits. “A New Nigeria is not just a vision; it is a necessity,” he stressed.
