Police Confirm Abduction of Fouani Managing Director and Others on Lagos Waterways
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of Mohamed Fouani, the Managing Director of Fouani Company, which distributes LG and Hisense electronic products, along with three other individuals of Lebanese descent. The incident occurred on Friday evening as they traveled by boat from Apapa to Victoria Island, near the Falomo Bridge in Ikoyi, Lagos.
According to unconfirmed reports, the kidnappers have contacted Fouani’s company and family, demanding a ransom of $1.5 million. State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, acknowledged the incident, stating, “We got the report and we are looking into it,” without providing further details.
A senior police officer, speaking anonymously, mentioned that the investigation is considering all possible motives, whether it was a targeted or random abduction. “We have the basic facts but are investigating thoroughly. I wouldn’t want to jeopardize their safety by divulging details,” he said. The officer also noted that while it is generally advised not to pay ransoms, families often feel compelled to comply to ensure the safe return of their loved ones.
In response to the abduction, the Marine Police have increased patrols of the waterways. A marine police officer refuted claims of inadequate security on the waterways, particularly at night. He emphasized that both the Marine Police and the Nigerian Navy regularly patrol the area, ensuring it is well-protected.
“We are investigating whether it was a random abduction or planned, as our waters are constantly patrolled. The government has significantly improved infrastructure and provided platforms for effective waterway patrols,” he added.
