President Tinubu Approves Rehabilitation of Katsina-Ala Road – Umahi

The Federal Government has given the green light for the long-overdue reconstruction of the Katsina-Ala road, a major route that has remained in a dilapidated state for years. This was revealed by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, during a press conference held on Wednesday at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking to journalists, Senator Umahi confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu granted approval on Tuesday for the full reassessment and reconstruction of the road project, which has long been neglected.
“We received Mr. President’s approval to revise and fully execute the Katsina-Ala road project,” Umahi stated. “This has been a pressing concern for us. While we mobilize resources for full construction, we’ll also begin immediate palliative interventions to improve access.”
The Minister also highlighted the scale of infrastructure investments in Benue State, noting the allocation of nearly $1 billion for a 260-kilometre stretch from Makurdi to 9th Mile. He emphasized the importance of peace in the region to ensure smooth execution of these projects.
“Benue is receiving one of the largest infrastructure investments in the country,” Umahi said. “Additionally, we are preparing to launch the second phase of a major road project that includes a 1.35-kilometre bridge linking Benue and Kogi States. This is a clear indication of the President’s commitment to the people of Benue.”
Turning attention to the South East, Umahi underscored the significance of the Enugu–Onitsha expressway. The dual carriageway, originally awarded for N202 billion under the tax credit scheme to MTN, had made slow progress prior to the current administration.
“When we assumed office, only N50 billion had been utilized,” he said. “We restructured the project by removing 72 kilometres, which were then re-awarded to SKCC for N150 billion. Work is now actively ongoing.”
To ensure temporary relief while major construction is underway, Umahi disclosed that both MTN and SKCC have been instructed to carry out emergency repairs on the most affected sections of the road.
“We’ve made it clear that no part of that route should remain impassable. Work is ongoing from Enugu to Onitsha, and we’re prioritizing the worst-hit areas for immediate attention,” he noted.
Umahi concluded by calling on residents of the South East to continue supporting President Tinubu, highlighting the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure in the region as a testament to its goodwill.
