Protests Continue in Abuja and Kano: See the Numbers that have dead, Arrested

Protests persisted in Abuja and Kano yesterday as part of a nationwide demonstration against economic hardships. In Kano, demonstrators defied a state-imposed curfew, gathering in Mandawari, Kofar Kwaru, and parts of the Nasarawa area. Chants of “We would rather be killed by a bullet than by hunger” echoed through the streets. The initially peaceful protest turned violent in Sani Mainage when some participants set tires ablaze and blocked roads, prompting police to use tear gas and warning shots to disperse the crowd.

The clashes resulted in at least eight injuries and multiple reports of fatalities. Witnesses indicated that security forces responded forcefully to those defying the curfew. Protesters in Kano were seen waving a Russian flag and calling for intervention from President Vladimir Putin, expressing dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s handling of their grievances.

The state government had imposed a 24-hour curfew, but demonstrations continued in various areas, including Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa, Kofar Nasarawa, and Unguwa Uku. Reports from residents mentioned eight deaths in Rijiyar Lemo, with casualties including women and children. Attempts by hoodlums to loot businesses, such as a Rufaida Yoghurt outlet, were also reported.

In Abuja, clashes intensified when DSS operatives and police used live ammunition and tear gas to disperse protesters and journalists at the MKO Abiola Stadium. Deputy Commissioner of Police FCT, Ishyaku Shuaibu, addressed journalists at the scene.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has called for a suspension of the protests, noting that government officials are discussing the issues raised.

There is a discrepancy between police and Amnesty International reports regarding casualties. The police have reported seven deaths, including those from a bomb explosion in Borno State and other violent incidents. In contrast, Amnesty International has recorded 13 deaths. The police also reported 681 arrests for various offenses, including armed robbery and property destruction. Efforts are underway to recover stolen property and investigate further.
