Reasons Overcoming Subsidy Removal Impact Will Take 6 Years, Says ADC Chairman
Dr. Ralphs Okey Nwosu, the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has projected that it will take six years for Nigerians to recover from the effects of the subsidy removal.
During a leadership retreat organized by the ADC in Abuja on Monday, Nwosu attributed the tumultuous first year of the current administration to the president’s failure to heed public opinion and “starting on the wrong foot.”
Nwosu emphasized that leadership should prioritize the needs of the people over the elite. He criticized the president’s performance, stating, “The President is not doing well. You cannot ignore the plight of hungry people. Implementing a 400 percent fuel price increase as the first policy upon taking office demoralizes the very people who are crucial to economic recovery. This decision will take more than six years to rectify.”
In a communiqué issued post-retreat, the ADC urged political parties to engage in continuous strategic planning rather than waiting until election years.
“This is why the ADC organizes leadership retreats to enhance the capabilities of its leaders. The party advocates for continuous learning.”
The ADC also stressed the importance of voter education and engagement, emphasizing that change in the electoral process should start with the electorate. “We will intensify our voter education programs. Voters are essential to democracy and nation-building, and ADC will maintain positive engagement with them.”
The retreat concluded that the ADC refined its transformative leadership ideology, declaring that the entire Nigerian system is deeply flawed and requires comprehensive reform. Political parties must take systematic steps to address and transform these issues.
Participants agreed to draw inspiration from Senegalese youth, leveraging their young members to enhance mobilization efforts and drive change in all elections, including local government, state, and national levels.
