Rotimi Amaechi Pledges Single Term if Nominated as ADC Presidential Candidate

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared his intention to serve only a single term if selected as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today, a political affairs program aired on Channels Television, the former Rivers State governor reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria’s informal power-sharing tradition between the North and South.

Amaechi emphasized the importance of maintaining political stability through adherence to what he described as an “unwritten agreement” on rotational leadership. “Given the current state of the country, it’s important to honor the gentleman’s agreement — eight years for the North, eight years for the South,” he said.

Reflecting on his past political stance, Amaechi recalled his opposition to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during a previous administration. According to him, the PDP had reneged on a four-year power-sharing commitment, prompting his resistance at the time. “It would have led to instability. The North would have reacted strongly, so I stood for continuity to maintain the peace and balance,” he explained.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Amaechi firmly argued that the South should be allowed to complete its turn in power. His pledge to serve only one term, he noted, is part of his broader commitment to national unity and political fairness.
