Scandal Hits Magodo Residents’ Association: Top Officials Accused of Embezzling Millions

The Magodo Residents’ Association is embroiled in a serious scandal, with allegations of financial misappropriation and corruption surfacing against key officials, including Chairman Sheriff Daramola and another member, Kunle. These officials are accused of embezzling millions of naira through questionable expenditures, unapproved contracts, and missing funds.

Concerns about financial irregularities first emerged in December 2023, when internal auditor Lawson Adesokan raised alarm bells. His memo, addressed to Daramola, highlighted unauthorized expenditures, particularly the approval of additional security officers without board consent, costing the association an annual sum of N4,800,000—exceeding the chairman’s approval limit.

Adesokan expressed his concerns regarding the lack of proper documentation and oversight, which he claimed left the association vulnerable to financial losses. He pointed out a troubling method of fund transfer that involved a fictitious payment voucher, suggesting that it was a setup for potential fraud.

In response to these allegations, both the Board of Trustees and the Magodo Residents General Assembly formed investigative committees to delve into the actions of Daramola and Kunle. These investigations revealed discrepancies in police allowance payments and highlighted significant weaknesses in the association’s financial management.

Reports indicated that the security secretary had received funds designated for police allowances but failed to distribute them appropriately. Further scrutiny suggested that Kunle had been improperly handling payments, raising suspicions of embezzlement.

A committee report from June 11, 2024, noted the lack of oversight and documentation, leading to potential mismanagement of funds that could undermine the association’s financial stability. Recommendations included the suspension of Kunle and a reprimand for Daramola due to negligence.

Another report from an ad-hoc committee detailed that the security secretary had failed to account for funds received from May 2023 to August 2024, with testimony confirming that no payments had been made to police officers since May 2023, despite continuous payments being recorded by the association.

The President of the South West Zone of the Magodo Residents’ Association, Nosa Ebomoyi, expressed frustration over the lack of action following the findings of the investigative committees. He emphasized that the mismanaged funds belonged to residents, including vulnerable groups, and vowed to continue advocating for accountability.

In a letter to residents, Ebomoyi highlighted the need for transparency and warned that mismanagement could lead to a revolt among residents regarding dues. He cited previous successes in uncovering fraud and increasing revenue, asserting that the community must remain vigilant.

In response to the allegations, Chairman Daramola maintained that due process was followed in all financial matters. He attributed the issues to longstanding practices from previous administrations, claiming that the investigative reports found no direct evidence of his wrongdoing.

The situation continues to develop as residents seek clarity and accountability from their asso

ciation’s leadership.
