Secret Exposed on how Emefiele Printed His Own Naira Currency
Ahmed Umar, a former Director of Currency Operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has revealed that ex-governor Godwin Emefiele printed a version of the naira that deviated from the design approved by then-President Muhammadu Buhari.
Umar made this disclosure while testifying at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama. According to Umar, the naira design approved by President Buhari featured elements such as a QR code and a right-side portrait placement, which were absent in the currency version produced under Emefiele’s directive. Additionally, the numbering scheme was also different from what the President had sanctioned.
This revelation came to light as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Emefiele on May 15, facing a four-count charge before Justice Maryanne Anenih of the FCT High Court. Emefiele pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail set at N300 million.
