See How Oluwo of Iwo Advocates for Sharia Law in South-West Nigeria

See How Oluwo of Iwo Advocates for Sharia Law in South-West Nigeria

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, has voiced his support for the implementation of Sharia law in Nigeria’s South-West region, asserting that the practice has long been part of Yoruba culture. His remarks came after an Islamic group planned to inaugurate a Sharia council on January 11, 2025, in Oyo State, though the event was postponed following widespread public backlash.

Many Nigerians, especially from the predominantly Christian Yoruba South-West, expressed concerns over the move, pointing out the distinct cultural and religious differences between the South-West and the Muslim-majority northern states where Sharia law is already in practice. However, Oba Akanbi defended the idea, emphasizing that Sharia law has been part of Yoruba land for over a century, particularly in Iwo, where a Sharia college exists and Sharia-compliant banks operate.

In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, the monarch explained, “Sharia law has been practiced in Iwo for over 100 years. We have Sharia banks in the South-West, and Muslims have the right to choose between customary law or the high court. Many Muslims feel marginalized in issues like inheritance and divorce because Western legal frameworks don’t align with Islamic practices.”

Oba Akanbi further argued that Sharia law, as enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution, is part of the country’s legal framework, particularly in regions with large Muslim populations. He added that the implementation of Sharia law would not affect non-Muslims, as it is intended solely for Muslims.

“Sharia law is for Muslims, and those who are not Muslim should not be bothered by it. If anyone wants to follow Islam, they are free to do so, just as Muslims are free to embrace Christianity,” the Oluwo stated. He emphasized that no government could deny Muslims their right to practice their religion freely.
