See the Number of Victims Found Dead After Flood Sweeps Through Anambra
In a tragic incident in Ugwu Mkpume Layout, Achalla Agu community, Nkpor Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, a mother of three and another individual have lost their lives due to a severe flood. The victims were asleep when the flood, which had accumulated after over 11 hours of rain from Thursday night into Friday morning, inundated their homes and swept them away. Their bodies were later discovered at different locations.
Our reporter, who visited the site on Saturday, learned that the torrential rains resulted in widespread flooding, submerging many buildings and destroying properties and farmlands valued in the millions. The flood also trapped families living on the first floors of several buildings, as their homes were completely engulfed.
Residents believe that the situation was exacerbated by a nearby construction company’s decision to direct runoff water into their community instead of the River Niger. Ifeanyi Oghota, Vice President of the Ugwu Mkpume Achalla Agu Landlords’ Association, expressed deep concern, noting that the community has not experienced such a flood in 25 years. He urged the state government to provide assistance, criticizing the construction firm’s handling of the floodwaters.
Dr. Alex, a local landlord, described the devastation, including the loss of livestock and significant property damage. He recounted how the flood, which broke into homes while families were sleeping, claimed the lives of a mother and her three children. While the mother was found deceased, her children were discovered alive and are now receiving treatment at Royal Hospital, Nkpor.
Another unidentified man’s body was also recovered from the flood. Residents are mourning the extensive losses and are seeking help from authorities. They allege that the construction company redirected floodwaters from surrounding areas into their community, which lacks the
