See The Numbers of Lives Torrential Rains kills Across Central America
Severe rainfall across Central America has resulted in at least 27 fatalities due to landslides and flooding over the past week. The majority of deaths occurred in El Salvador, with additional casualties reported in Guatemala and Honduras, officials confirmed on Friday.
Fernando Lopez, El Salvador’s Environment Minister, attributed the heavy rains to low pressure over the Pacific Ocean, compounded by the effects of tropical storm Alberto, which claimed four lives in Mexico. “Regrettably, the death toll has now reached 19,” stated Luis Amaya, head of civil protection in El Salvador, during a television interview. Among the deceased were two young girls whose home was engulfed by a landslide.
Amaya mentioned that precautionary evacuations have been conducted in high-risk areas, particularly on hillsides and near overflowing rivers.
In Guatemala, authorities have reported seven deaths and significant damage to roads and bridges due to flooding. In Honduras, the Permanent Commission for Contingencies (Copeco) reported one death, with 3,500 people affected and over 200 homes damaged. Rising rivers in southern Honduras, near the border with El Salvador, have isolated several communities, according to an AFP journalist.
While Nicaragua has not reported any fatalities, officials there are cautioning about rising rivers, flooded homes, and damaged roads.
