Emirs
The Kano State government has affirmed that Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II is still the Emir of Kano following a ruling by the Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman, earlier on Thursday.
During a press conference held at the Government House on Thursday evening, State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Haruna Isah Dederi, addressed the court’s decision. He stated, “On June 20, 2024, the Federal High Court No. 1 in Kano delivered its ruling on the case before it. On behalf of His Excellency Gov. Abba K. Yusuf and the Kano State Government, I am honored to discuss the ongoing litigation concerning the abolition of the Five Emirates and the deposition of former emirs.”
Dederi emphasized that the Kano State Government respects the Federal High Court’s ruling regarding the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law, 2024, seeing it as an affirmation of the rule of law. He explained, “The court’s decision unequivocally reaffirms the validity of the law passed by the Kano State House of Assembly and signed by His Excellency the Executive Governor on May 23, 2024, at 5:10 PM. This aspect of the judgment is crucial to the entire matter.”
He further clarified the implications of the ruling, noting that it validates all government actions taken before the interim order from the court. “This means the abolition of the Five Emirates established in 2019 is upheld, and the deposition of the Five Emirs is also sustained by the Federal High Court. Consequently, Muhammadu Sanusi II remains the Emir of Kano.”
Dederi also mentioned that the judge approved their application to stay proceedings until the Court of Appeal addresses the jurisdictional appeal. “Fortunately, the law’s signing and the reinstatement of His Highness, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, occurred on May 23, 2024, prior to the Interim Order served on May 27, 2024,” he added.
