See when Reps Aim to Finalize Constitution Amendment

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has pledged to complete the amendment process by December 2025. This commitment was reaffirmed by Hon. Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesman of the House, during a recent panel workshop in Lagos.
In an interview with Arise TV, Agbese lauded the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the Constitution Review Committee, for his exceptional leadership and innovative methods. He emphasized that Kalu’s citizen-driven approach has involved extensive engagement with various stakeholders, ensuring that the review process genuinely reflects the aspirations and concerns of Nigerians.
Agbese highlighted that this inclusive strategy has fostered a sense of ownership among citizens, making the constitution more representative of the collective values of the nation. He praised Kalu’s dedication to democratic growth and his commitment to addressing key areas where Nigerians seek constitutional changes.
The committee, according to Agbese, is focused on several critical issues, including state creation, state police, local government autonomy, and the contradictions in local government elections. They are also working on enhancing judicial autonomy and funding.
“We aim to amend the constitution in a way that strengthens our institutions without creating new problems. Our goal is a flexible constitution that unites the nation and fosters a sense of nationhood among all citizens,” Agbese concluded.
