Shari’ah Commission Summons Cleric Over Alleged Gay Meeting Claims
The Bauchi State Shariah Commission has called upon Dr. Abdallah Gadon-Ƙaya, a prominent Islamic cleric from Kano, to explain his allegations regarding a supposed gathering of LGBTQ individuals in Bauchi.
Dr. Gadon-Ƙaya recently circulated an unverified video on social media in which he claimed that a group of gays and lesbians had assembled at a local facility for a 10-day orientation, reportedly paying about N100 million for the event. However, he did not provide specific details about the date or location of the gathering, though he stated he is prepared to present evidence if required.
In response, Professor Hamisu Dass, Chairman of the Bauchi State Shariah Commission, confirmed that the Commission has formally invited Dr. Gadon-Ƙaya to provide further information on the alleged event. He also mentioned that the Commission has investigated the hotel where the meeting was said to have occurred but has not yet disclosed the results of this inquiry.
Professor Dass emphasized that if any wrongdoing is confirmed, the Commission will ensure that appropriate legal action is taken according to Shariah law. The cleric, known for his vocal opposition to LGBTQ issues, had previously criticized the inclusion of LGBTQ matters in international agreements to which Nigeria is a signatory.
