Spain Bars US War Flights from Airspace, Deepens Rift Over Iran Conflict

Spain has moved to block the use of its airspace and military bases by United States aircraft engaged in operations linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, marking a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between Madrid and Washington.
The country’s Defence Minister, Margarita Robles, confirmed the decision on Monday, stating that no authorisation had been granted for US military movements connected to the conflict. According to her, both the use of Spanish bases and access to national airspace for such missions have been expressly denied.
As reported by El País and cited across international coverage, including updates monitored by Channels Television, the restriction has disrupted aspects of US military logistics, forcing aircraft to adopt alternative routes en route to the Middle East.
Officials indicated that exceptions would only be considered under emergency circumstances, effectively shutting down routine operational access previously available to US forces transiting through European corridors.
The development reflects Spain’s firm political stance against the ongoing hostilities, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez positioning himself as one of the most vocal Western critics of the military campaign. His administration has repeatedly emphasised the need for de-escalation, a position that has drawn sharp reactions from Washington.
Diplomatic friction between both allies has intensified in recent weeks. Reports highlighted by The Guardian and echoed in Nigerian media discussions suggest that former US President Donald Trump has openly criticised Spain’s posture, even hinting at possible economic consequences, including trade-related measures.
The disagreement also ties into broader tensions within NATO, where Spain has resisted calls from the United States to significantly increase defence spending among member states. Madrid’s reluctance to meet the proposed benchmark has further strained relations between the two long-standing allies.
Analysts say Spain’s latest move underscores growing divisions within Western alliances over foreign policy priorities, particularly in relation to military interventions in the Middle East.
With the situation continuing to evolve, the decision is expected to have wider implications not only for military coordination but also for diplomatic relations within NATO and beyond.
