A tragic incident unfolded in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, where a stampede at a children’s funfair led to the deaths of numerous children, with reports indicating that up to 32 young lives were lost.
The event, held at Islamic High School in Bashorun, was organized by the Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WINGS) Foundation, founded by Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
The funfair aimed to accommodate 5,000 children; however, attendance exceeded expectations, with over 7,500 participants arriving. The overcrowding led to a chaotic scene as attendees attempted to force their way through the main gate, resulting in a deadly stampede.
In response to the tragedy, the Oyo State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The state police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, confirmed that the command is probing the matter to determine the factors that led to the unfortunate event.
Governor Seyi Makinde expressed profound sorrow over the loss of young lives and has taken immediate action by halting the event and deploying security and medical personnel to the venue to prevent further harm. The governor assured the public that all responsible parties would face justice following thorough investigations.
Additionally, the management of Agidigbo FM, a media partner for the event, clarified that while they promoted the funfair, they were not involved in its organization. They expressed condolences to the affected families and emphasized the importance of accurate information during this sensitive time.
As the investigation continues, the Oyo State government and law enforcement agencies are committed to uncovering the details of this tragic incident and ensuring accountability for those responsible. The community mourns the loss of these young lives and seeks answers to prevent such a disaster from recurring in the future.
