Trump Says One-Third of Nigerian Immigrant Households in US Depend on Welfare

Former United States President **Donald Trump** has released data claiming that a significant number of Nigerian immigrants in America rely on public assistance. According to the figures, **approximately 33.3 percent of Nigerian immigrant households** reportedly benefit from government-funded support programmes in the US.
The statistics were published on **January 4, 2026**, via Trump’s Truth Social platform, as part of ongoing Republican discussions around immigration policy, welfare usage, and the economic impact of migrants within the United States.
The information was presented in a chart titled *“Immigrant Welfare Recipient Rates by Country of Origin,”* which analyses welfare participation among immigrant households from **about 114 countries and territories**. The data covers access to benefits such as food aid, healthcare services, and other forms of public assistance.
Countries listed with the **highest levels of welfare dependence** among immigrants include **Bhutan (81.4%), Yemen (75.2%), Somalia (71.9%), Marshall Islands (71.4%), Dominican Republic and Afghanistan (68.1% each), Congo (66.0%), Guinea (65.8%), Samoa (63.4%), and Cape Verde (63.1%)**.
In contrast, immigrants from countries with the **lowest reported reliance on public benefits** include **Bermuda (25.5%), Saudi Arabia (25.7%), Israel/Palestine (25.9%), Argentina (26.2%), an unspecified South American category (26.7%), Korea (27.2%), Zambia (28.0%), Portugal (28.2%), Kenya (28.5%), and Kuwait (29.3%)**.
The release of the figures coincides with stricter immigration measures under the Trump administration, including **expanded travel bans and tighter entry requirements**, as debates continue over who qualifies to enter and remain in the United States.
