Trump Urges Global Naval Presence in Strait of Hormuz as Oil Route Tensions Rise

Trump Urges Global Naval Presence in Strait of Hormuz as Oil Route Tensions Rise

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called on several major world powers to deploy naval forces to the Strait of Hormuz in response to rising threats to global oil shipments linked to tensions with Iran.

In a message posted on his Truth Social account, Trump urged countries that rely heavily on energy transported through the waterway to contribute military vessels to help secure the route and keep maritime trade flowing.

The former U.S. leader specifically mentioned China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom as nations that could join a coordinated naval presence in the region.

According to reports referenced by The Punch, Trump argued that countries benefiting from the oil trade passing through the strait should share responsibility for maintaining its security.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically important maritime corridors in the world. Energy analysts estimate that roughly one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments move through the narrow waterway linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman.

Recent tensions have raised concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the area following alleged Iranian attacks and disruptions targeting vessels in the region.

Trump maintained that although the United States had significantly weakened Iran’s military capacity, the country could still disrupt shipping using smaller-scale tactics.

According to coverage cited by The Guardian Nigeria, he acknowledged that drones, sea mines or short-range missile strikes could still pose risks to vessels navigating the narrow passage.

U.S. naval forces, he added, may begin escorting commercial tankers to ensure safe passage through the waterway if tensions persist.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has already begun taking precautionary steps in the region. British authorities have deployed the HMS Dragon to support security operations around RAF Akrotiri, following reports of a drone incident near the installation.

However, defence officials indicated the warship would take several days to reach the operational zone after departing from Portsmouth.

Trump also issued a warning regarding Kharg Island, a key hub responsible for handling the majority of Iran’s crude oil exports. He suggested that the facility could become a potential target if Iran continues to obstruct shipping in the strait.

Energy analysts say any disruption involving Kharg Island could significantly affect Iran’s ability to export crude oil.

Petras Katinas, a researcher at the Royal United Services Institute, noted that Iran’s economic stability is closely tied to operations at the facility.

Reports cited by The Nation indicate that escalating tensions around the Strait of Hormuz could have ripple effects on global oil prices and maritime security if diplomatic efforts fail to ease the situation.
