Two Senators from Akwa Ibom Leave PDP, Join APC
Two senators representing Akwa Ibom State—Sampson Ekong of Akwa Ibom South and Aniekan Bassey of Akwa Ibom North-East—have formally withdrawn from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and aligned themselves with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Their defection letters were officially presented to the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Wednesday’s plenary session.
This move follows closely on the heels of similar resignations by two senators from Osun State—Olubiyi Fadeyi and Francis Fadahunsi—who recently stepped down from the PDP amid ongoing internal disputes, though they have yet to reveal their next political affiliations.
Fadeyi, the senator for Osun Central, communicated his resignation in a letter dated July 12, 2025, addressed to Oke Ejigbo, the PDP Ward 3 chairman in Ila Orangun, Osun State. In the letter, he cited deep-seated divisions and prolonged legal conflicts within the party over the past three years as the reasons behind his decision, which came after consultations with his political allies and family.
Likewise, Fadahunsi, representing Osun East, also resigned, submitting his letter dated June 12, 2025. His resignation, which became public on social media last Saturday, was attributed to ongoing crises and extended legal battles within
the PDP.
