WAEC Shuts Down Viral Claims of 2025 Exam Cancellation
In response to growing concerns and widespread misinformation, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially debunked rumors suggesting that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has been cancelled.
Over the past week, social media platforms and several blogs have been abuzz with claims that WAEC had decided to call off the 2025 examinations due to undisclosed reasons. The rumors sparked confusion and anxiety among students, parents, and educators across West Africa, with many calling on the examination body to issue a formal clarification.
In a statement released on Monday, WAEC described the circulating news as “completely false, misleading, and designed to cause unnecessary panic.” The Council emphasized that preparations for the 2025 exams are in full swing and that no such cancellation has been discussed or approved.
“The attention of the West African Examinations Council has been drawn to viral reports alleging the cancellation of the 2025 WASSCE. We wish to categorically state that these reports are unfounded. The Council remains committed to conducting the examinations as scheduled,” the statement read.
WAEC further urged students and stakeholders to rely only on official communication channels for information regarding the examination schedule and other related updates. The Council also warned the public to be cautious of false news, particularly from unverified online sources.
Education experts and school administrators have welcomed WAEC’s clarification, stating that such misinformation can negatively impact student morale and disrupt academic planning. Many schools have resumed their final revision plans, and students are being encouraged to stay focused and not be distracted by baseless rumors.
The 2025 WASSCE is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of the year, and according to WAEC, the official timetable will be released soon.
As the examination draws closer, students are advised to concentrate on their studies and disregard any unauthorized claims. WAEC reaffirmed its mission to uphold the integrity of its examinations and support the academic aspirations of students across its member co
untries.
