What Will Happen if Peter Obi Goes Back to PDP? ADC Responds

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has addressed recent speculations surrounding Peter Obi’s political direction, especially concerning rumors of his possible return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Monday, July 28, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s interim national publicity secretary, confirmed that Obi, who ran for president under the Labour Party in 2023, remains an integral part of the opposition coalition.
Peter Obi Still Committed to Opposition Coalition – ADC
Abdullahi firmly denied reports suggesting Obi’s potential defection to the PDP, stating, “Peter remains a part of the coalition, no matter what narratives are out there.”
ADC: PDP Still Under APC’s Shadow
He further explained that Obi is fully aware of the political implications of returning to the PDP, especially considering what he described as the lingering control of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the opposition party.
“It’s no secret that the PDP is still heavily influenced by the APC. Peter Obi understands better than most that returning there would be a risky move,” Abdullahi noted, according to The Cable.
He also pointed out that the ADC’s rising influence is causing shifts within the PDP, suggesting a broader realignment of political forces as the next general election nears.
ADC Prioritizing Growth Over Presidential Candidacy – Abdullahi
On the topic of the ADC’s plans for the 2027 presidential election, Abdullahi made it clear that the party is currently more focused on building a solid foundation rather than choosing a candidate.
“We’re only a month old as a political party. Right now, our priority is on strengthening our internal structure, setting up effective systems, and showing Nigerians we’re committed to true democratic values,” he said.
He added that when the time comes, the ADC will select its presidential candidate through a fair and transparent process.
“When it’s time to decide who our flagbearer will be, we’ll do it in a way that reflects our values of democracy and openness,” Abdullahi emphasized, as reported by Vanguard.
