Why Nigeria Receives the Most Aid from Our Foundation — Bill Gates

Bill Gates, Co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has clarified why Nigeria receives the highest amount of intervention funds from the foundation in Africa.
In an interview with journalists during the 2024 NutriVision Dialogue in Abuja, Gates explained that while significant funds are allocated to Asia, Africa receives even more support, with Nigeria being the primary beneficiary.
Gates elaborated, “Our investment in Nigeria is substantial due to its large population and significant needs. This means we have invested billions in the country.”
He expressed satisfaction with progress in areas like child mortality but acknowledged that more improvements are needed.
The foundation’s focus remains on tackling global health disparities and eradicating diseases such as measles, malaria, and polio. Gates also revealed plans to increase future funding, particularly targeting primary healthcare, where the return on investment is notably high.
In addition to healthcare, the foundation invests in agriculture, recognizing its critical role in Nigeria’s economic advancement. Gates highlighted the importance of providing farmers with high-yield, climate-resistant seeds, fertilizers, accurate information, and weather forecasts to enhance agricultural productivity and lower food prices.
The foundation also supports food fortification initiatives to improve nutritional quality and public health. Gates emphasized that diverse, affordable food options, especially milk and eggs, are essential for combating malnutrition.
