Why Nigeria’s Future Relies on Skills, Not Oil — Governor Uzodinma

Imo State Governor, Chief Hope Uzodinma, has called for a significant shift in Nigeria’s economic focus from oil dependency to skill acquisition, emphasizing that this change is crucial for empowering the youth and shaping future leadership.

Speaking during the inaugural convocation lecture at Ojaja University in Ilorin on Saturday, Uzodinma delivered a speech titled “The Role of Private Universities in Developing Skilled Labour for a Resilient Nigerian Economy.” He asserted that Nigeria’s future “does not rest on the oil beneath our soil but on the invaluable skills and knowledge we cultivate.”

He pointed out that in the modern economy, human capital is more valuable than natural resources such as oil and gold. Uzodinma urged private universities to take the lead in providing vocational training and skill development, enabling young Nigerians to achieve true independence both now and in the future.

Highlighting the essential role of higher education in creating a skilled workforce, he noted that private institutions have the potential to nurture innovation, entrepreneurship, and knowledge that will benefit generations to come. “Private universities must be at the forefront of harnessing these capabilities,” he remarked.

Uzodinma also encouraged the leadership of Ojaja University and similar institutions to see themselves as nation-builders. “You are not merely educators; your role extends to nation-building,” he emphasized, acknowledging the significant impact their efforts can have on national resilience.

He called for increased support from governments and stakeholders for private universities, advocating for a collaborative approach to develop an educational ecosystem aligned with industry demands. “The journey ahead may be challenging, but it is a noble cause. Together, we can leverage education to cultivate a workforce that is both skilled and visionary,” he concluded.

In addition, the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, encouraged graduating students to consider themselves representatives of the nation in their future pursuits.
