Wike Cautions AMAC on Unauthorized Street Naming in Abuja City Centre
…As He Launches Road Infrastructure Projects in Guzape and Asokoro Districts
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has strongly warned the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) against assigning names to streets and major roads in the city centre without official approval.
Wike issued the warning on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, while flagging off new road construction in the Guzape District, which also connects to the AIT area in the Asokoro zone.
During the event, the Minister criticized the practice of AMAC—led by Chairman Hon. Christopher Maikalangu—of naming roads after private individuals, even when those roads were funded by the FCT Administration. He called the practice “unacceptable,” stressing that such honors should be reserved for individuals who have made significant contributions to Nigeria or the capital territory.
“You can’t just wake up and name a road built with public funds after someone who may have only paid a fee. That’s not how it should work,” Wike said. He directed the AMAC Chairman to refund any money collected from private individuals for this purpose and emphasized that street naming in Abuja city must go through proper government approval.
Highlighting Tinubu’s Impact Through Infrastructure
Speaking on the newly launched Guzape road project (Cadastral AO9, Lots 1 & 2), Wike said the development reflects President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to upgrade infrastructure across the capital.
“Residents here have waited years for good roads. Now, under President Tinubu’s leadership, they finally have access. This is real progress,” Wike stated.
He noted that the administration is focused on transforming Abuja to match global standards and urged residents to support the ongoing efforts.
Contractors Urged to Deliver on Time
Wike commended the construction company, Dantata and Sawoe Nigeria Ltd., encouraging them to stick to the timeline and avoid cost adjustments. He also advised them to hire local workers from the community to create job opportunities and support the local economy.
Minister of State and FCDA Praise the Project
FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, described the project as a major step toward developing the capital city. She praised both President Tinubu and Minister Wike, whom she called “Mr. Project,” for their commitment to delivering quality infrastructure.
Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, provided more details on the project. He explained that although initial infrastructure had been installed in parts of Guzape and Asokoro, new layouts were later added that lacked basic road access. The current project covers 24 roads, totaling about 9.2 km, and includes drainage systems, culverts, street lighting, power, and telecom lines.
He noted that the new roads will improve mobility, safety, and the overall quality of life for residents in both districts and called for public cooperation to ensure smooth execution.
Contractor Vows High-Quality Delivery
Managing Director of Dantata and Sawoe, Mr. Udo Heidschuster, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to Abuja’s development. He praised the leadership of Minister Wike and said the ongoing infrastructure boom in the city is clear proof of a focused and determined administration.
