Wike Should Step Down and Address His Obsession With Rivers Politics – Ajibola Basiru

SRJ

Senator Ajibola Basiru, National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to resign from his ministerial position, accusing him of meddling in party affairs in Rivers State.

Basiru said Wike’s recent attacks against him and his office over comments on respecting state governors in the party are “shocking and unbecoming” for a member of the Federal Executive Council. He noted that his remarks were simply a reaffirmation that governors remain the leaders of the party in their respective states.

“Let me make this clear: Minister Wike is not a member of APC and has no standing to interfere in our party’s internal matters,” Basiru said. “As National Secretary, I am responsible for protecting the interests of APC and its structures nationwide. My statements regarding Rivers State cannot be considered undue interference.”

He also dismissed claims linking him to alleged funds in Rivers State, describing such assertions as “cheap blackmail” and reaffirming his integrity. “If there is evidence, let it be produced, or we may seek legal resolution,” he added.

Addressing Wike’s perceived threats, Basiru said, “He is not God, and I will not be intimidated. I am one of the young Nigerians who stood against military dictatorship and fought for democracy long before Wike entered politics.”

Basiru emphasized that supporting President Bola Tinubu does not automatically make Wike an APC member. “Millions of Nigerians outside APC support the president; Wike is no different. But attempts to destabilize APC in Rivers will not be tolerated. He cannot bring the spirit of PDP into our party,” he stated.

He concluded by urging Wike to resign if he cannot separate his ministerial duties from party politics. “It is improper for a Federal Executive Council member to create confusion within APC structures. The honourable step is to step down and stop undermining the party,” Basiru said.
