Yoruba Community in Enugu Appoints Its First Oba

The Yoruba Community in Enugu State has made history by appointing Alhaji Abdulazeez Adebayo as its inaugural Oba. Adebayo, originally from Osun State, is the first traditional ruler to lead the Yoruba community in Enugu since their settlement in the region.

During a community meeting held on Tuesday in Enugu, Adebayo outlined that the Yoruba community in the state comprises members from seven states: Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Lagos, Kogi, and Kwara. This community includes groups such as the Ibadan Progressive Union, Ede Descendants, and various other Yoruba descendant unions from Ekiti, Ondo, and Ilorin.

Adebayo expressed his gratitude and noted, “Today, the Ibadan Progressive Union has chosen to align with the Progressive Yoruba Community in Enugu. The long-awaited desire to have an Oba has finally been fulfilled.”

Regarding his selection, Adebayo explained that the process involved finding a candidate with a commendable record, good character, and the ability to serve the community effectively. He emphasized the importance of trustworthiness and proper representation for the Yoruba people in the state.

The call for a traditional ruler began in earnest in 2018, with various candidates expressing interest. After thorough screening, a report on the aspirants was presented to the Yoruba community. Adebayo shared that the selection process was marked by challenges, including the loss of three individuals who had been part of the selection process.

He was eventually chosen by the elders as a neutral and trustworthy figure. Adebayo, who has lived peacefully in Enugu since February 7, 1979, urged for support, unity, and inclusion from all Yoruba residents in the state.

Chief Valentine Adesina, one of the previous aspirants, acknowledged the leadership disputes among candidates but highlighted that a committee was formed to address these issues. Adesina noted that, despite the lack of a formal election, criteria such as age and character were considered. Ultimately, the elders selected Adebayo, recognizing his long-standing involvement in the community’s affairs.

Adesina concluded, “Given his extensive experience and dedication over the past 35 years, Adebayo is well-suited to lead us forward. I have chosen to step aside for him to advance our community.”

This historic appointment marks a new chapter for the Yoruba community in Enugu, with Adebayo poised to guide and unite the members in their shared heritage and aspirations.
