17 escape death in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway road crash
No fewer than 17 persons on Saturday narrowly escaped death in a motor accident that occurred at Kilometre 14, Magboro on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Sunday Special gathered that the white 18-seater Toyota bus with the registration number GME809XB was conveying passengers from Ekiti State inward Lagos State when the accident happened around 11.50 am.
The vehicle which somersaulted and hit its back on the ground was majorly boarded by students of Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The driver, who gave his name only as Sunday, said the accident happened as a result of the bursting of one of the rear tyres.
“I was not injured. I just lost control of the vehicle which made it to somersault immediately after I applied the brakes,” he stated.
One of the victims, Funmilola Ojo, told our correspondent that the vehicle was not at top speed, but they (passengers) noticed that the driver tried to control the vehicle before the crash.
A motorist close to the scene, who gave her name as Bola Agunloye, said, “The bus would have landed on my car if I did not quickly turn to the Punch junction. The accident happened exactly at the Punch Bus stop. Thank God, no person was waiting at the bus stop.”
Sunday Special observed that the students sustained bruises and those critically injured were rushed to a hospital.
Speaking in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, the Ogun FRSC spokesperson, Florence Okpe who confirmed the incident, said, “The crash happened at Punch bus stop and it involved a Toyota Hiace Bus but nobody died. 18 people were involved; 10 male and eight female adults, but four sustained injuries.”
