17-Year-Old IMSU Student Arrested for Faking Kidnapping and Death

The Imo State Police Command has apprehended a 17-year-old student named Jesse Chidiebere from Imo State University (IMSU) for allegedly staging her own kidnapping and death.
According to a statement from the police spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, Chidiebere was arrested on October 26, 2024, after the Orji Police Division received a distress call from worried citizens reporting her as missing. This incident sparked significant concern within her family and the university community.
The police reported that a message from her WhatsApp account claimed she had been abducted and killed, urging her family to visit the Orji Police Station for confirmation. In response, police officials launched a search operation and found Chidiebere alive the following morning, October 27, revealing that she had fabricated the entire story as a social media prank.
Okoye noted that an investigation is underway to determine her motivations for such behavior, and she is expected to face legal consequences.
The Commissioner of Police for Imo State, CP Aboki Danjuma, expressed his dismay over the incident, labeling it as irresponsible and highlighting the misuse of police resources that resulted in unnecessary public alarm. He urged parents to advise their children against participating in harmful pranks and spreading false information, reaffirming the police’s commitment to maintaining safety and combating misinformation in the state.
