281 Inmates Escape from Maiduguri Custodial Centre Due to Flooding

The Nigerian Correctional Service has reported that 281 inmates have escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri, Borno State, following severe flooding in the area.

The flood led to the evacuation of the facility, and the subsequent damage caused several inmates to go missing. As of Sunday, seven of the escaped inmates have been recaptured and returned to custody.
According to the service’s spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, efforts are underway to locate the remaining inmates. The details and biometric information of those missing have been released to aid in their recovery.
Abubakar explained, “The recent flooding in Maiduguri has severely impacted the Medium Security Custodial Centre and its surrounding staff quarters. During the evacuation of inmates, 281 were found to be missing.”
He assured that the Correctional Service is collaborating with other security agencies, both covertly and overtly, to track down the escapees.
“The public is assured that while these efforts continue, they do not compromise overall public safety,” Abubakar added.
