Confession: how I was almost burnt alive___Singer Daddy Showkey

Nigerian music legend John Asiemo, widely known as Daddy Showkey, recently shared a harrowing experience from his past where he narrowly escaped being lynched for theft. Speaking on the latest episode of the Honest Bunch podcast, Showkey, now 53, opened up about his days as a member of a notorious gang.

The ‘Galala’ singer recounted how he and his gang, armed with guns found in a refuse dump, terrorized residents in Ikorodu, Lagos. During one of their criminal activities, Showkey and another gang member were captured by a mob intent on setting them ablaze.

“In my younger days, I was part of a gang. We discovered a gun in a refuse dump in Ikorodu and used it to intimidate people,” he explained.

“One day, during one of our usual operations, someone spotted us and raised the alarm, shouting ‘Thieves! Thieves! Thieves!’ They caught me and my friend, tied us up, and were about to burn us alive. Miraculously, we were saved, but unfortunately, another gang member, known as 91A, was caught and burned to death on the new road.”

Reflecting on his survival, Showkey remarked, “I stand as a testament for every young person out there. If I, John, can survive and become Daddy Showkey, anyone can rise above their past. Many are ashamed of their history, but I am not. It doesn’t bother me.”

Daddy Showkey rose to fame in the 1990s with his unique musical style and signature ‘Galala’ dance moves.
