Oba of Benin Criticizes EFCC Official for Alleged Misconduct
The Oba of Benin, Omo N’ Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has raised serious accusations against a member of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), alleging the individual has been complicit in facilitating criminal activities. These allegations were made during a meeting at the Oba’s palace in Benin City, Edo State, with Mr. Effa Okim, the newly appointed Benin Zonal Director of the EFCC.
The monarch referred to a specific criminal case involving former palace officials who had been apprehended for fraud and handed over to the EFCC for investigation. He claimed that some EFCC operatives had mishandled the case, treating the offenders leniently and failing to prosecute them effectively.
Expressing his dissatisfaction, the Oba suggested that the EFCC investigators ignored clear evidence of fraud and did not pursue the case diligently. He highlighted the influence of external parties and alleged that some EFCC officials might have been compromised by bribes.
The Oba stated, “Despite our efforts to support the EFCC, there have been significant shortcomings in their operations. They often make grand statements, but when it comes to action, they seem swayed by the highest bidders.”
He recalled writing to a former EFCC Chairman and sending an emissary to discuss concerns about certain elements within the EFCC in Edo State, specifically mentioning the disappointing conduct of one female operative. He criticized her performance harshly, suggesting she was more influenced by bribes than by her duty to the EFCC.
Despite his criticisms, the Oba expressed hope that the new EFCC Chairman, Mr. Olanipekun Olukayode, would maintain integrity in his role. He also assured his continued support to the state government in tackling social issues and reducing crime.
Mr. Okim, in his address, sought the Oba’s support in combating financial crimes, noting that Edo State ranks second to Lagos in financial crime incidence in Nigeria. He also acknowledged the historical ties between Edo State and his home state of Cross River, seeking the monarch’s blessings to perform his duties effectively.
