UMUAHIA – A tragic accident on the Aba – Ikot Ekpene highway in Abia State has resulted in the deaths of four passengers. The collision involved a Toyota Sienna bus and a tricycle carrying four passengers, including the driver.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus was traveling at high speed towards Aba, while the tricycle was heading to a border community between Abia and Akwa Ibom states. The crash, which occurred around 5:30 PM, was attributed to the bus driver’s excessive speed and disregard for the road conditions.
The highway is currently under rehabilitation, with several sections still incomplete. In the aftermath of the accident, sympathizers attempted to remove the bodies, while soldiers at the scene prevented people from taking photographs.
A local youth organization, the Agalaba Patriotic Forum (APF), had recently urged the construction company responsible for the roadwork to expedite repairs on the poorly maintained sections, citing the risks posed to motorists.
