Benue Assembly Condemns Assault on Members and Residents
The Benue State House of Assembly has expressed strong condemnation over the recent assault on its members and residents of Tyomu and Mbakera in the Gwer Local Government Area of the state.
Reports gathered by FIRST CLASS GISTS indicate that the members were attacked on Thursday while returning from Katsina-Ala after conducting a public hearing on a bill for a law to establish the Benue State Civil Protection Guards and related purposes.
According to sources, more than 40 suspected herders ambushed them at Tyomu and opened fire on the vehicles transporting the members.
In a statement issued by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information and Orientation, Hon. Elias Audu, on Friday, it was revealed that the attacked members included Majority Leader Saater Tiseer, Chief Whip Hon. Ipusu Bemdoo, Hon. Samuel Jiji of Logo, Hon. Simon Gabo of Mata State Constituency, and Rt. Hon. Cephas Dyako.
The statement also highlighted the continuous invasion of the Tyomu community and Mbakera by these suspected herders for several days without any resistance.
Expressing concern, the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aondona Dajoh, emphasized that the attackers’ mode of operation suggests a carefully planned assault by hostile elements against the state.
The Speaker particularly noted the disturbing timing of the attack, coinciding with a public hearing on a security bill, indicating a possible deliberate act rather than a mere coincidence.
He reiterated the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to fulfilling its legislative duties in the best interest of the state.
Furthermore, the House called upon security agencies to promptly apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they face the full weight of the law.
