Reasons 200 Years is Insufficient to Address FCT Challenges
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stated that even 200 years would not be enough to resolve all the issues facing the nation’s capital.
Highlighting the continuous nature of governance, Wike emphasized that his successors would need to build upon his efforts. He spoke during the Ministerial Sectoral Updates event, part of the activities marking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s first year in office.
The event was attended by key ministers, including the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu; Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim Bio; Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu; Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmud; Minister of State for Petroleum, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri; and Minister of State for Youth Development, Mr. Ayodele Olawande.
Wike candidly admitted the enormity of the task, saying, “Even if I were FCT minister for 200 years, I could not solve all the problems. Each of us contributes our best, and then others take over to continue the work.”
He reiterated President Tinubu’s directive to prioritize completing abandoned projects over starting new ones, underscoring the importance of continuity in government. “Mr. President made it clear: with numerous unfinished projects, our focus should be on completing these rather than initiating new ones,” Wike explained.
