Passport Home Delivery Service to Begin in June – Minister Interior
During an inspection of the electronic gates at the new terminal of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Friday, the minister announced that home delivery of passports will start in June.
He explained that the delay in initiating home delivery services was due to the absence of dedicated data centers. He added that for Nigerians living abroad, the service will first be available in the United States and the United Kingdom, with initial testing to ensure its efficiency.
“We have completed the entire solution, but upon assuming office, we found that a data center was lacking. We were relying on a private company’s data center, and we appreciate their assistance. However, we believe in creating permanent solutions rather than temporary fixes.
While the service could have been launched in February, we prioritized building our own data center from the ground up to maintain data integrity and national security. This approach is more important. It’s unacceptable that the NIS, which has existed for 61 years and is responsible for Nigeria’s biometric data, does not manage its own data.
Having our data managed by a third party is not acceptable, which is why we have taken these steps,” the minister stated.
