Governor Obaseki Implements ₦70,000 Minimum Wage for Edo State Workers
Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration in Edo State has commenced payment of the new ₦70,000 minimum wage to state workers, fulfilling a pledge to increase wages starting in May 2024.
During the recent inauguration of the Labour House in Benin City, Governor Obaseki announced the wage hike from ₦40,000 to ₦70,000, aiming to alleviate the economic strain on residents. The move was made to address the challenges posed by the current economic situation.
On Sunday, Chris Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, confirmed that May salaries have been disbursed, reflecting the new wage structure. He emphasized that this step highlights the administration’s dedication to improving the welfare of Edo State employees.
Nehikhare encouraged the workers to remain diligent in their responsibilities, underscoring that their continued effort is crucial for the administration’s successful conclusion. He called on workers to reciprocate the government’s commitment to their well-being by contributing effectively to the state’s progress.
“The Edo State Government has issued the May salaries, now incorporating the new ₦70,000 minimum wage,” Nehikhare stated. “This action honors Governor Obaseki’s promise to enhance the minimum wage from ₦40,000 to ₦70,000 starting this May. It reflects our ongoing commitment to fulfilling our statutory obligations promptly and supporting our workers amid the economic challenges posed by federal economic policies and fuel subsidy removal.”
