Finidi George’s tenure as Super Eagles manager commenced with a challenging 1-1 draw against South Africa in their 2026 World Cup qualifier.
Despite his prolific performance last season with Bayer Leverkusen, where he netted 30 goals across all competitions, striker Victor Boniface was left on the bench as an unused substitute in the crucial match in Uyo.
Instead, it was Turkey-based Fisayo Dele-Bashiru who made headlines by scoring Nigeria’s equalizer after falling behind to the Bafana Bafana.
Following the match, Finidi George addressed the media’s questions regarding his surprising decision to exclude Boniface from the playing field. The coach emphasized his professional judgment and asked for trust in his choices: “Let me do my job,” he asserted.
