How Governors are Nigeria’s biggest problem, – Hillard Eta

Former APC Chairman Criticizes Governors for Nigeria’s Issues

Chief Hillard Eta, a former acting national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has highlighted governors as a significant problem in Nigeria. In an interview in Calabar, Chief Eta emphasized that while much attention is focused on President Tinubu, the governors remain unaccountable despite receiving substantial resources.

Chief Eta argued that it’s time for Nigerians to scrutinize their governors and question their use of public funds. He stated, “Governors are the major problems of Nigeria. They take half of the commonwealth and do absolutely nothing, yet people don’t call them out. The state governments often use resources meant for the people as if they belong to them individually.”

He pointed out that, despite the increased funds allocated to states in recent months, there is little accountability or visible progress. “For example, in the past three months, there has been a tripling of money coming to the states. Who is asking the governors how creative they have been with these funds?” Eta questioned.

Chief Eta contrasted this with federal projects, such as the Lagos to Calabar coastal highway, and challenged the states to show similar initiatives. He also highlighted the lack of focus on agriculture by the state governments, which has contributed to the ongoing food challenges in Nigeria. “If the governors were paying attention to agriculture, we would not be talking about food challenges today,” he said, adding that had the state governors followed the example of regional governments from the 1960s, many of Nigeria’s current problems could have been avoided.
