CRIME: See Jail Term Man that impersonate EFCC Operatives was Sentenced To

 

 Two individuals have been sentenced to a combined 46 years in prison for impersonating Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives in Lagos. Justice O.O. Abike-Fadipe of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja handed down the sentence to Ugwu Pascal Chijioke and Ibrahim Sadiq Adekunle.

 

The Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC re-arraigned Chijioke and Adekunle on a revised five-count charge, which included impersonation, attempted property acquisition, possession of fraudulent documents, and unlawfully wearing EFCC uniforms.

 

One of the charges stated that on May 12, 2021, Chijioke and Adekunle attempted to defraud Oriyomi Johnson by falsely claiming that the Chief Magistrate Court of the Lagos State Judiciary had ordered the seizure and sealing of a property in New Horizon Estate, Lekki. They knew this claim to be false, violating Sections 8(b) and 11(3) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006. Another charge indicated that they unlawfully wore EFCC jackets, breaching Section 79(1)(b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

 

Both defendants pleaded guilty to all charges. The prosecution counsel, Abdulhamid Lamido Tukur, presented the case’s facts and urged the court to convict and sentence the defendants.

 

Justice Abike-Fadipe convicted Chijioke and Adekunle on all five counts. Each defendant received seven years for each of the first three counts, one year for the fourth count, and eight months for the fifth count, all to run concurrently.

 

The defendants were apprehended in May 2021 during an illegal operation at New Horizon Estate, Lekki, following credible intelligence. Items seized included fake EFCC ID cards, jackets, and a counterfeit court order from the Mushin Magistrate Court.
