The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have scheduled an urgent meeting following the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) decision to delay the memo on the minimum wage.
A senior official at the NLC headquarters confirmed that the meeting will take place at Labour House on Wednesday at 10:00 am. The primary focus will be to discuss the FEC’s decision to defer action on the minimum wage memo.
Earlier reports from Daily Trust indicated that Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that while 39 items were addressed at the FEC meeting, the minimum wage memo was not among them. The memo is based on a report from the Tripartite committee, which includes representatives from local governments, states, the NLC/TUC, and the federal government. Although the committee had submitted its findings, the FEC postponed a decision, citing the need for further consultations involving multiple stakeholders, including local governments, states, the federal government, the organized private sector, and labour unions.
Minister Idris emphasized that the decision was postponed to allow President Bola Tinubu to conduct extensive consultations before submitting a final proposal to the National Assembly.
An NLC representative, speaking anonymously to Daily Trust on Tuesday night, mentioned that the leadership of both labour centres would convene to form a unified stance before any consultation with the President. The official noted the importance of refining their position during the Wednesday meeting.
Earlier this month, the organized labour had initiated a nationwide strike to press their demands for a new minimum wage. Although the strike lasted only two days, it significantly disrupted economic activities across the country.
