How Labour Leaders Disrupt Labour Party Meeting With Peter Obi In Attendance
The leadership dispute within the Labour Party intensified recently during a National Working Committee (NWC) meeting attended by former presidential candidate Peter Obi. The Labour Party National Transition Committee (LPNTC), led by Comrade Abdulwahed Omar, demanded the immediate resignation of Chairman Julius Abure, citing the impending expiration of his tenure and that of the NWC by the end of the month.
The LPNTC members forcefully entered the meeting venue in Abuja, stressing the urgency of avoiding a leadership vacuum and asserting their mandate to organize a new national convention. Meanwhile, outside the party secretariat, Peter Obi addressed the labour leaders, emphasizing reconciliation among party members and the importance of unity for the party’s growth.
In response to the turmoil, Julius Abure, the embattled national chairman, acknowledged Peter Obi’s efforts in promoting peace within the party. In a statement released by the Labour Party’s national publicity secretary, Obure expressed gratitude for Obi’s role in revitalizing the party and preparing it for future electoral challenges, including the upcoming 2027 elections.
However, tensions escalated further when members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) national transition committee also called for Abure’s resignation at the party headquarters in Abuja, prompting a standoff with security officials who used tear gas to disperse protesters seeking entry.
The crisis underscores ongoing challenges within the Labour Party, highlighting divisions over leadership and the direction of the party as it prepares for future political engagements in Nigeria.
