See the Numbers of Shops NAFDAC Closes in Enugu; See Reasons
The National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down approximately 100 shops at Ogbete Main Market in Enugu State, the largest market in the South-eastern region.
According to Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s South-east Director, the shops were closed due to suspicions that the owners were involved in selling counterfeit alcoholic beverages.
Pharmacist Iluyomade explained that the agency’s officials conducted a raid on the market on Monday. During this operation, they confiscated a truckload of adulterated products and arrested four traders suspected of distributing fake beverages.
“We have been active in the popular Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, since Friday and have closed down 100 shops identified for selling counterfeit alcoholic drinks. Arrests were made, and the suspects are currently in custody,” stated Mr. Iluyomade.
He emphasized the threat these fake wines and alcoholic beverages pose to unsuspecting customers and the general public, reinforcing NAFDAC’s commitment to eliminating these harmful products from the market.
**Prosecution**
Iluyomade mentioned that the suspects will face charges following the ongoing investigation. He highlighted that this raid aligns with NAFDAC’s mission to protect the health of Nigerians and eradicate substandard, fake, and adulterated products from the South-east.
The operation was carried out with support from the Nigerian Police Force, State Security Service, and the Nigerian Army.
