The president highlighted the significance of July 13th, marking the culmination of both local and international events in Soyinka’s honor. Recognizing a Literary Giant

Soyinka, who made history in 1986 as the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, has continued to inspire through his works and personal resilience, including his battle against prostate cancer. Tinubu emphasized the appropriateness of celebrating Soyinka’s legacy while he is still with us, recognizing his vast contributions to literature, human dignity, and justice.

A Renowned Cultural Figure

The president reflected on Soyinka’s extensive career and influence, describing him as a true Renaissance figure with numerous talents, including playwriting, acting, poetry, human rights activism, and music. Tinubu acknowledged Soyinka’s critical role in Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, particularly his efforts during the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election and his subsequent activism in exile.

Enduring Influence

Tinubu celebrated Soyinka’s ability to challenge oppression and injustice globally, from apartheid in South Africa to racism in the United States. He highlighted Soyinka’s courageous actions during Nigeria’s civil war and his impactful early writings, such as “The Lion and the Jewel” and “Death and the King’s Horseman,” which showcased his literary brilliance and commitment to a just society.

A Legacy of Inspiration

President Tinubu concluded by expressing his hope that Soyinka will continue to inspire future generations and remain a beacon of courage and creativity. He wished Soyinka a happy 90th birthday, with continued health and fulfillment in the years leading up to his centennial.
