Atiku: Suppressing Peaceful Protests Violates the Constitution

It is imperative to clarify that the Nigerian Constitution upholds the right of citizens to engage in peaceful protests, a fact supported by the judiciary. Specifically, Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) clearly affirms the right to peaceful assembly and association.

Trying to identify and target individuals behind the proposed protests is a pointless endeavor, especially when it is evident that Nigerians, including supporters of Tinubu and the ruling APC, are suffering from widespread hunger, frustration, and despair due to the government’s incompetence and lack of direction.

It is notably hypocritical that those now attempting to curb these rights were the very ones leading protests in 2012. A government that is truly responsible must ensure a safe and secure environment for its citizens to exercise their constitutionally protected right to peaceful protest. Suppressing these rights is not only unconstitutional but also a direct attack on our democratic principles. -AA
