Aishat Yesufu: Letter to Abia State Governor Alex Otti: A Call for Dialogue and Protection for Protesters
Dear Governor Alex Otti,

Citizens do not require approval from security agencies to stage protests. However, they are obligated to inform the security agencies 48 hours in advance, allowing these agencies adequate time to prepare and ensure the safety of all participants.

The decision of Abia State residents to protest indicates their belief in your leadership and their desire to voice their concerns directly to you. As highlighted by Mr. Peter Obi, who supports your engagement with the public, it is crucial for you to meet with the protesters and address their grievances through dialogue.
Historically, it is not the protesters who cause harm but rather the misuse of security agencies by governors or presidents, who sometimes employ thugs to assault peaceful demonstrators and vandalize property. To avoid such scenarios, you should follow the example set by Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State in 2020 by ensuring that security agencies protect rather than harm the protesters.
Here are some steps I recommend:
1. Ensure Protection: As the Chief Security Officer of your state, direct all security agencies to provide protection for the protesters.
2. Engage in Dialogue: Meet with the protesters to understand their demands. Engage with them to discuss potential solutions.
3. Address and Act: For issues within your jurisdiction, take responsibility and provide a timeline for addressing them. For matters requiring federal intervention, forward the concerns to the relevant authorities.
4. Value Citizen Input: Continue your commitment to serving your people by listening to their voices through protests, rather than only hearing from aides or supporters.
5. Demonstrate Leadership: Resolving the citizens’ issues effectively will enhance your leadership profile and maintain your reputation as a responsive and responsible governor.
Sincerely,
Aishat Yesufu
