Response to Claims of Police Interference at CDHR Event

Response to Claims of Police Interference at CDHR Event

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), established in 1989 to advocate for Nigerian rights, recently faced scrutiny regarding a substantial police presence outside its headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos. This situation has sparked a debate about the reasons behind the security deployment.

The Lagos State Police Command’s spokesman has addressed the controversy, urging Vanguard to verify facts and avoid sensationalism. According to the police, while security personnel were present, they did not invade or obstruct the CDHR’s event. The symposium proceeded smoothly, with adequate security provided by both the police and other agencies.

The CDHR has released images showing police officers stationed at a distance from the building but has not produced evidence of any disruption or interference. Notably, Vanguard omitted a key part of the CDHR’s statement, which expressed hope that the police presence was intended to ensure the event’s protection and facilitate peaceful discussions.

The Lagos State Police Command also provided security for the CDHR’s procession from Adeniyi Jones to Alausa. The authorities maintain that there was no invasion or obstruction of the event, and encourage media outlets to present a balanced account by seeking responses from all parties involved.
