Hustle, bustle as Kaduna, Kano, Katsina residents shun 1million man protests

On Saturday, the cities of Kaduna, Kano, and Katsina were bustling with everyday activities as residents largely ignored the planned one-million-man protests. Correspondents from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) observed that people in these states continued with their routine tasks, including shopping, commuting, and other economic activities, without interruption.

Markets, motor parks, and other commercial hubs remained active, unaffected by the proposed demonstrations. Commercial drivers and motorcyclists were seen transporting passengers as usual. Security personnel were out in force, patrolling key areas to protect vital state and national assets.

A security source, who requested anonymity, stated that there were no issues reported as the populace went about their lawful activities. The Kaduna State Government had previously announced that unauthorized processions would not be allowed due to public safety concerns.

Samuel Aruwan, Kaduna’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, issued a statement emphasizing that the state would not tolerate any criminal elements posing as protesters. He highlighted that the Security Council, led by Governor Uba Sani, had reviewed the current security situation and declared that anyone using protests as a cover for criminal activities would be dealt with severely.

Aruwan acknowledged citizens’ rights to free expression and lawful assembly but stressed that the state could not allow criminals to exploit protests to cause harm, as seen during the disturbances from August 1 to 5. He urged the public to adhere to the 6pm to 8am curfew and report any suspicious activities to the Security Operations Room.

In Kafanchan, NAN correspondents noted that there were no signs of protest, with residents proceeding with their daily routines. Security forces were stationed at key points throughout the town. In Zaria, life continued as normal, though there was an increased security presence due to a passing out parade at the Nigeria Military School.

In Kano, local residents indicated their decision to refrain from participating in future protests. Alhaji Abdulkadir Yakubu from Gwale LGA advised his family and acquaintances to ignore any protest calls.

Overall, the planned protests did not significantly disrupt activities in these regions, and security measures were in place to maintain order.
