Obasanjo: Many Nigerian Leaders Lack Integrity and Deserve to Be in Jail

Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticized the integrity of many Nigerian leaders, suggesting that those currently holding public office lack the necessary character for effective governance and should instead be in prison.

Speaking at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo addressed a group of six House of Representatives members who are sponsoring bills on a six-year single presidential term, rotational presidency between the north and south, and the rotation of governorship positions among the three senatorial districts in each state. The delegation was led by Ugochinyere Ikenga, representing the Ideato North and South Federal Constituency in Imo State.

Obasanjo emphasized the importance of character in leadership, stating that many current public officials fall short in this regard. He argued that a change in leadership mentality is essential for meaningful progress in Nigeria.

He remarked, “Our primary issue is ourselves. Until we address this, no matter if we implement one term of four years, six years, or seven years, if the same individuals with the same mentality remain in power, nothing will change.”

Obasanjo continued, “Yes, we need to rethink our democratic processes and government structures, but what about the character of those in power? Many should be behind bars or worse. If these are the people ruling us, we shouldn’t expect improvement. The focus should be on the character and track record of our leaders—whether they are role models and how we select them.”

He stressed the need to carefully consider the attributes and qualifications of leaders to ensure they possess the necessary integrity and capability for effective governance.
