Samson Siasia to Announce Future Plans After FIFA Ban
Former Nigerian international and ex-coach of the Super Eagles, Flying Eagles, and Dream Team, Samson Siasia, has announced that he will reveal his future career plans following the completion of his five-year FIFA ban, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.
Initially, FIFA imposed a lifetime ban and a $50,000 fine on Siasia for his involvement in match-fixing activities related to betting. This sanction was the result of an investigation into attempts by Wilson Perumal to manipulate matches. Siasia denied these allegations and appealed the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which reduced the ban to five years in 2021 and eliminated the fine. The ban, which was retroactively applied from August 16, 2019, was deemed more appropriate by CAS, as the original life ban was considered excessive for a first-time, passive offense with no immediate negative impact on football stakeholders.
As of August 16, 2024, the anniversary of the retroactive start of the ban, Siasia is poised to discuss his next steps. When approached for comment, Siasia preferred to wait until the ban concludes before sharing his plans. “After the ban is over, we can talk,” he told PUNCH Sports Extra.
There are rumors that the 57-year-old might soon take over as coach of Mighty Jets Football Club in Jos, with discussions reportedly set for August 21. Reflecting on his experience with the charges, Siasia recounted his surprise at being linked to match-fixing, especially since he had unknowingly interacted with an individual with a known history in match-fixing. He expressed frustration over the lack of communication and support from FIFA during the investigation.
Siasia, who had a distinguished playing career with the 1994 Nigerian squad that won the AFCON and reached the World Cup Round of 16, also made significant contributions as a coach. He led Nigeria to a runner-up finish at the 2005 World Youth Championship, and earned silver and bronze medals at the 2008 and 2016 Olympics, respectively.
